This Shiai was held on the 28th of January and it was called the Caruana Cup. Joseph Caruana, also known as iz-Zuzu, is the founder of Maltese Judo. In the 1960s, the English servicemen used to practice Martial Arts including Judo, Karate and Jujitsu. Occasionally, they allowed civilians to join them in training. One of these civilians was iz-Zuzu. In 1969, a steering committee was created in 1969 at the Zabbar Phyical Cultural Club, under the Presidency of Tony Caruana. Regular classes of Judo and demonstrations to propagate the sport started. In 1971, another 3 clubs were opened by Envic Galea and Tony Tanti and the Malta Judo Federation was recognised by the NOC and affiliated to the International Judo Federation and the European Judo Union. So, it is thanks to Joseph Caruana, that the Malta Judo Federation is one of the most active and successful federations on the island of Malta.
